Black Ops 2 will 'redefine' the Call of Duty franchise

Since the official reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, there have been mixed emotions about Treyarch taking the franchise to the future.

If you haven't yet heard, Black Ops 2 will be set in the year 2025, propelling players in a Cold War-like global conflict inspired by today's headlines.  It will feature advanced weaponry, robotics, and drone warfare.

Obviously, it's a time period never explored in the Call of Duty franchise.  We've had past, we've had modern, but we've never had future warfare.

As Activision's CEO of Publishing, Eric Hirshberg said, it's the "most ambitious Call of Duty ever".

"We are bringing disruptive innovation to the franchise and we are doing it on several fronts," Hirshberg added. "We're pushing the boundaries technologically, graphically, and from a narrative and gameplay perspective."

Some of those changes include all-new cinematic action in the single-player campaign featuring branching storylines and non-linear missions.  Now your choices will actually effect the mission of at hand.  Treyarch isn't totally abandoning the Call of Duty model however.

"At the same time, we need to stay true to the epic realism, authenticity, heart pumping adrenaline, and cinematic action that so many people love and expect from a Call of Duty game."

"Treyarch's vision for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will redefine the Call of Duty franchise for the future--both literally and figuratively," Hirshberg concluded.

Regardless of how you feel about the initial worldwide premiere trailer, it's definitely noticeable that Treyarch is looking to take the franchise in a new direction.  The changes they have planned and the features they have talked about so far definitely sound promising.  Will it truly redefine Call of Duty?  That remains to be seen, but Treyarch seems to be on the right path.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is set to release on November 13th.  Will you be getting it or do you need to see more?
